Evony Edward III: F2P Guide to Getting & Pairing Him

Edward III was the King of England who transformed the kingdom into one of Europe’s most formidable military powers. In Evony, he is an Epic Historic General who excels at leading Ranged troops. To help you understand his strengths, acquisition methods, and best pairings, we have put together this guide for new players looking to maximize his potential.

Background of Edward III

In July 1346, Edward III launched a major offensive, sacking Caen and pushing across northern France. At Crécy, he leveraged the favorable terrain to take a decisive stand against Philip VI’s pursuing army.

Late on August 26, the French army, despite vastly outnumbering the English, launched its attack. In a brief yet decisive archery duel, Welsh and English longbowmen swiftly routed a large force of French mercenary crossbowmen. Undeterred, the French mounted knights unleashed relentless waves of cavalry charges late into the night. Every charge met the same fate: fierce fighting and another French repulse.

This total victory for the English paved the way for the highly favorable Treaty of Brétigny — and cemented Edward III’s legacy as the king who turned England into one of Europe’s most formidable military powers.

Douglas and Charles XII’s buffs mostly take effect when they are “leading the army to attack”, and Douglas also needs to carry a dragon or spiritual beast. Other generals’ buffs all take effect when they are “leading the army.”
Looking at the data, Edward III offers balanced overall buffs, though he ranks near the top for generals with skills tied strictly to leading an army. Other than relatively low Defense and March Size boosts, his stats perform remarkably well across the board.

Synergistic Effect and Skill Book Usage Notes

General Conflict:

According to general simulation, Edward III can not be paired with Louis IX, Arthur Wellesley, and Toyotomi Hideyori because of the special skill clash.

Skill Book Usage Notes:

Besides these three generals, all other ranged generals can be combined with Edward III, but the following special cases should be noted when using skill books:
  • Edward the Black Prince, Henry V, Franz Joseph I, James Cook, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Tachibana Ginchiyo, Jumong, and Subutai cannot use ‘Ranged Troop Attack’ skill books.
  • Visconti, Matsunaga Hisahide, and Ahmose I need to use ‘Ranged Troop HP’ skill books on themselves, not on their partners.
  • Winfield Scott, Li Shimin, Vladimir the Great, Elektra, and Idunn need to use ‘Ranged Troop Attack’ skill books on themselves.

Recommended Combinations:

Since Edward III performs best during the early to mid-game, we recommend budget-friendly setups that favor free-to-play options and minimize wasted resources when you eventually transition to late-game generals.
If you prefer to recruit generals through taverns, consider the following combinations:
  • Mihai + Edward III
  • Douglas + Edward III
  • Charles XII + Edward III
  • Edward III + Alfred the Great
If you can obtain Epic Historic General (Premium) tokens, consider using recent archer generals as your main generals, such as Marcian, Visconti, Charles VI, and Hatshepsut, as the probability of obtaining them is relatively high.
